The Spanish tragic comedy ‘Volver’ centres on three generations of women, with Penelope Cruz’s award-winning performance as Raimunda, a woman struggling to grasp the unexpected arrival of her mother’s ghost. Her mother seems to have some unfinished business, and returns to tie together the family’s loose ends and uncover the buried truths that plague Raimunda and her sisterhood.

Director Almodovar’s signature red colour palette and sharp-witted focus on women shines through this examination of female experience and its underlying tragedy.
