TOO MUCH: MELODRAMA

Our BFI Melodrama season continues with Todd Haynes’ 2002 film ‘Far From Heaven’!

Award-winning Director Todd Haynes’ film is a brilliant companion piece to Douglas Sirk’s All That Heaven Allows, which inspired the film and its scrutinising look at American domesticity in the 1950s.

‘Far From Heaven’ stars Julianne Moore in this dramatic tale of misfortune and martial disruption. She plays Cathy, a 1950s housewife navigating a scandalous love affair with her family’s African American gardener. All is not right in suburbia as the burgeoning romance causes the unravelling of Cathy’s seemingly perfect life.

This historical drama touches on its themes of social taboos with a florid and delicate nature, exploring domesticity, racism, homosexuality and class through Todd Haynes’ homage to the melodrama sub-genre.
